Preview: Breakout Lacrosse Classic

On Saturday, March 15, Wilson High School will host Breakout Lacrosse and DC Lacrosse Association’s 6th Annual Breakout Lacrosse Classic.  This is Wilson’s second consecutive year hosting the Breakout Lacrosse sponsored and directed event.

The event features nine teams from Washington D.C.—Georgetown Day, Gonzaga, Sidwell Friends, St. John’s, St. Albans, KIPP DC, School Without Walls, Maret High School, and Wilson High School—and guest Eleanor Roosevelt High School from Greenbelt, Maryland to make it an even 10 teams.

Last year, games were intense with the inner city rivalry pushing players on all teams to prove themselves against their fellow D.C. schools.  Despite the strong competition, camaraderie and sportsmanship are always on full display, bringing out the best in all of the players.

Saturday’s schedule goes as follows:

9:00 – Eleanor Roosevelt vs Georgetown Day

11:00 – KIPP DC vs School Without Walls

1:00 – Gonzaga vs St. John’s

3:00 – St. Albans vs Sidwell Friends

5:00 – Maret vs Wilson

All of these games are well matched and should make for an interesting event.  The team to watch for is Gonzaga.  Ranking 7th in the DigitalSports National Lacrosse Rankings, the Eagles opened their season with a 6-5 win over 27th ranked St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes.  Coming off a tough 12-10 loss to 9th ranked Hill Academy, Gonzaga is looking to prove that they are more than deserving of a top spot in the national rankings.

An exciting matchup to watch is Maret vs Wilson.  Last year, Maret walked away with a 6-5 victory after four overtimes.  Another game that close would be an excellent way to wrap up the classic.

Tickets are free for students high school age and under, and adults must pay a $5 admission.  DC Lacrosse Classic t-shirts and game programs will be sold.  The Wilson Lacrosse Booster Club will be selling concessions during the event.  All earnings will go to WINNERS Lacrosse (Washington Inner City Lacrosse Foundation), a non-profit organization aimed at getting D.C. boys and girls involved in lacrosse, teaching them the basics of the game and teamwork.  WINNERS intends to use lacrosse to develop into considerate, helpful, and conscientious young adults.

With some great games for a great cause, the Breakdown Lacrosse Classic is sure to be a fun and exciting event, drawing spectators from all over the D.C. area.
